English

The English curriculum aims to inspire a lifelong love of language and literature, empowering students to become confident, articulate and thoughtful communicators. Through a rich and varied curriculum, we seek to engage and motivate students from Key Stage 3 through to Key Stage 5, fostering curiosity, independence and a passion for learning. Our curriculum is carefully sequenced to ensure clear progression, building on prior knowledge and developing increasingly sophisticated skills in reading, writing and oracy as students move through each key stage.

Reading is at the heart of our curriculum and we encourage students to become enthusiastic and reflective readers who can engage critically with a wide range of texts from different genres, contexts and cultures. Through exposure to both canonical and contemporary voices, students explore how writers craft meaning and reflect the world around them. They are also learn how to write fluently and accurately, adapting their style for a variety of purposes and audiences. From imaginative and creative writing to analytical and persuasive forms, our curriculum enables them to develop a confident authorial voice. Each key stage builds upon prior learning, ensuring that students refine their technical accuracy, expand their vocabulary and learn to express ideas with confidence, clarity and creativity.

We recognise oracy as a vital life skill and through discussion, debate, performance, and presentation, our students develop the skills to articulate their ideas thoughtfully, listen with empathy and engage purposefully with differing voices and perspectives.

Beyond the classroom, students broaden their experience of English through creative writing competitions, theatre visits, and participation in Debate Mate. These opportunities allow them to apply their skills in authentic contexts, deepening their appreciation of language and literature. Such experiences nurture creativity, collaboration, and self-expression, and are rooted in the FCJ values of excellence, hope, dignity, gentleness, justice, and companionship.
