Creative & Design Technology
Creative and Design Technologies is where imagination meets real-world skill. Across Art, Graphics, Textiles, Food Technology and Design & Technology, our ambitious and inclusive curriculum empowers every pupil to think creatively, work practically and take pride in producing high-quality outcomes. We want pupils to enjoy being inventive, to be brave with ideas and to develop the confidence to experiment, refine and succeed.
From Key Stage 3 onwards, pupils learn how to generate ideas, explore materials and techniques, and make informed design choices. They develop strong foundations in drawing and visual communication, colour and composition, design principles and the creative process of researching, designing, making and evaluating. In workshops, classrooms and kitchens, pupils learn to use tools and equipment safely and accurately, developing precision, resilience and independence. They are taught to plan carefully, solve problems, work to deadlines and respond positively to feedback, because great design is shaped through improvement.
Our curriculum connects creativity with purpose. Pupils explore artists, designers and cultures from across time and the world, understanding how creativity responds to people’s needs and the contexts in which products and images are made. They learn how design influences everyday life, from sustainable materials and ethical production to nutrition, function and user experience. We encourage curiosity and ambition, helping pupils build the technical vocabulary to evaluate work thoughtfully and communicate their ideas clearly.
As pupils progress into Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5, they deepen their specialisms, develop stronger technical control and produce more sophisticated, personal outcomes. Whether preparing for qualifications in Art, Graphics, Textiles, Food or Design & Technology, pupils leave us with transferable skills for further study and careers in the creative industries.
Above all, Creative and Design Technologies is a place to create, to make, to taste, to design—and to discover what you’re capable of.
