Health and Social Care

At its core, the Health and Social Care curriculum enables students to discover how we develop throughout the life stages, and the factors that can have positive and negative impacts on our physical, intellectual, emotional and social wellbeing. In turn, we hope that this raises individual expectations of how we can each live successful and healthy lives, by looking after ourselves and the people around us. Care values are at the heart of the curriculum and, in line with the values of the FCJ community and Catholic Social Teaching, this enables our students to develop compassion, empathy, commitment and tolerance.

The curriculum is sequenced carefully to ensure progression from the Year 9 optional course, through the BTEC Tech Award to the AAQ BTEC National Award, following examination board specifications. A wide range of teaching and learning strategies are used to ensure that students of all abilities can flourish and achieve. We aim to cultivate independent learners, who can research and discuss current issues in Health and Social Care, with increasing insight and confidence. Using real-life scenarios and case studies allows students to gain a deeper, conceptual understanding of human growth and development, and working in Health and Social Care. This prepares them for progression to degrees, apprenticeships, or employment in the sector.

The curriculum aims to further enhance interest and enthusiasm for the subject by inviting Health and Social Care professionals, such as nurses, counsellors and paramedics, into school, and by organising visits to Health and Social Care providers within the local community.
