At the heart of our History curriculum is the aim to develop students’ curiosity, fascination and enjoyment of the past. Through the study of Local, British, European and World History, pupils are encouraged to engage with stories of the past in meaningful ways, enabling them to form personal connections with History and to better understand the world in which they live today.

We intend for our students to develop a well-rounded, robust and increasingly sophisticated knowledge of the past and its relationship to the present. Our curriculum provides opportunities for pupils to gain a deeper, broader and richer understanding of British history alongside the wider world, equipping them with the knowledge required to interpret their place within Britain and the global community. Through this breadth of study, students develop an understanding of diverse experiences and social groups, fostering tolerance, empathy and kindness—values which are central to the FCJ ethos.

The History curriculum is carefully sequenced with clear stepping stones that guide pupils over their three, five, or seven-year journey. Knowledge and skills introduced on entry are systematically built upon year by year, ensuring students develop both secure substantive knowledge and strong disciplinary understanding.  Through enquiry, discussion and reflection, students are encouraged to think critically, evaluate evidence and consider different interpretations of the past. This approach supports the development of compassionate, reflective and analytical thinkers, preparing students to become informed, responsible and active citizens who use their gift and talents for the common good.
