Science

The Science department, through its ambitious and engaging curriculum, seeks to foster in students a deep sense of curiosity about the world around them. Science underpins everything, and an understanding of the principles of life and the universe enables students to engage meaningfully with the processes that shape their daily lives, society and the environment. In line with our FCJ values, we strive for high standards, encourage students to see the potential of science to improve the world, and help them consider the ethical implications of scientific developments.

The curriculum at all stages is spiralised so that key scientific concepts are introduced, revisited and built upon over time. This helps students to understand increasingly complex ideas in biology, chemistry and physics, and to become confident learners who enjoy their lessons and develop a genuine love of science. Students follow the National Curriculum at Key Stage 3 and have the opportunity to study either Combined Science or Triple Science at GCSE, enabling them to pursue pathways that are both ambitious and appropriate to their strengths and aspirations.

At Key Stage 5, we offer A Level Biology, Chemistry and Physics alongside a BTEC qualification in Applied Science, providing a rich and inclusive suite of academic and vocational courses. These courses deepen students’ scientific knowledge and investigative skills, preparing them for a wide range of future destinations, including university study in STEM subjects, apprenticeships and science-related careers. In keeping with the FCJ values of dignity and gentleness, we encourage students to recognise the value of every person, to use their scientific understanding responsibly, and to promote the care of creation through thoughtful engagement with issues such as health, energy, technology and the environment.

We offer a wide range of enrichment opportunities outside the classroom for students to further develop their love and understanding of science, including many trips and visits, STEM clubs and focused activities and workshops. These experiences broaden horizons, nurture a zest for learning, and inspires them to become thoughtful, responsible and compassionate stewards of creation.
