Languages

We offer a broad, ambitious MFL curriculum underpinned by the National Curriculum and GCSE requirements. Our curriculum map is driven by key linguistic concepts, ensuring students acquire secure knowledge of vocabulary and grammar alongside the skills required by the end of each Key Stage.

Our schemes of work show carefully planned progression across listening, speaking, reading and writing. A strong foundation in core grammar and vocabulary enables students to develop linguistic accuracy while building cultural capital through exposure to different countries, communities and traditions. At KS3, topic areas and grammatical structures are deliberately sequenced to form a solid foundation for more in-depth learning at KS4. Progress is supported through regular retrieval of prior knowledge, with content frequently revisited and built upon to strengthen long-term memory and promote deeper understanding.

At KS3, Dynamo (French) and Viva (Spanish) workbooks are used to reinforce knowledge, introduce new vocabulary and provide interleaved homework to support retention. From the outset, we teach grammatical structures using correct terminology and make explicit links to English and other languages to deepen understanding.

At GCSE, we use the Pearson AQA GCSE (9–1) textbooks for French and Spanish, which provide a clear continuation from KS3. These resources form a strong core, but staff regularly adapt and enhance materials to meet the needs of learners. This is supported by collaborative practice, shared resources, learning walks and lesson observations to ensure high-quality provision.

Student engagement is central to our intent. We believe that enjoyment in language learning builds confidence and leads to greater proficiency. Lessons are designed to be meaningful, with a strong focus on real-life situations and authentic cultural contexts. Students are motivated when learning extends beyond language itself, helping to kindle curiosity about the wider world and promote diversity and cultural awareness. We aim to provide a foundation for further language study while encouraging students to become confident, culturally aware global citizens.

Our curriculum is enriched through activities beyond the classroom, including European Day of Languages, El Día de los Muertos, university guest speakers and planned cultural visits to France and Spain, enabling students to apply their skills in authentic contexts.
