Maths

The mathematics curriculum aims to inspire curiosity, resilience and an appreciation for the power and importance of mathematics. We seek to engage and motivate students from Key Stage 3 through to Key Stage 5, nurturing independence, perseverance and a lifelong love of learning. Our curriculum is carefully sequenced to ensure clear progression, consolidating and extending knowledge each year while developing increasingly sophisticated skills in reasoning, problem-solving and application.

At Key Stage 3, students build upon the foundations of Key Stage 2, strengthening number fluency, algebraic thinking, proportional reasoning, geometry, and data handling. They are encouraged to make connections between mathematical ideas and other subjects, such as interpreting data in geography or using graphs in science. Through discussion and exploration, students learn to reason mathematically, test conjectures and appreciate the logic and creativity that underpin the subject.

At Key Stage 4, students refine these skills, applying them to more complex problems that prepare them for GCSE mathematics and beyond. Lessons are designed to include stretch and challenge for all learners, encouraging them to think deeply, make connections across topics and approach unfamiliar problems with confidence and resilience. At Key Stage 5, students deepen their conceptual understanding, exploring the depth, structure and real-world relevance of mathematics while developing the independence and rigour needed for higher education and future careers.

Across all key stages, students learn to communicate mathematically through discussion, problem-solving, and precise use of notation. They develop fluency in mental, written and calculator-based methods while learning to think critically and creatively.

Beyond the classroom, students enrich their mathematical experience through UKMT Maths Challenges, STEM projects, and cross-curricular problem-solving activities. Rooted in the FCJ values of excellence, hope, dignity, gentleness, justice, and companionship, our curriculum fosters reflective, ambitious learners who use mathematics to make a positive difference in the world.
