Social Sciences Department Curriculum Intent
The Social Sciences curriculum at Key Stage 5 aims to develop curious, reflective and socially aware young people who seek to understand human behaviour, society and the causes of crime and deviance. Through the study of Psychology, Sociology and Criminology, students are encouraged to question assumptions, explore differing perspectives and engage critically with complex issues affecting individuals and communities, both locally and globally.
Our curriculum is designed to provide students with a rich and rigorous body of knowledge, underpinned by key theories, concepts and research methods from across the social sciences. Students build secure subject knowledge in areas such as socialisation, inequality, identity, mental health, power, crime, deviance and social control, while developing an understanding of how social structures and institutions shape human behaviour and life chances. Clear progression enables students to deepen their understanding over time and to make connections within and across disciplines.
Alongside substantive knowledge, the curriculum places a strong emphasis on disciplinary skills. Students develop the ability to analyse and evaluate research evidence, assess the strengths and limitations of theories and methodologies, interpret data, and construct coherent, balanced arguments using subject-specific terminology. They are taught to think critically, challenge bias, identify ethical issues and apply knowledge to contemporary social contexts. Strong written and verbal communication skills are developed to support academic success and future pathways.
In keeping with the FCJ ethos, the Social Sciences curriculum seeks to educate the whole person and promote dignity, justice and service. By engaging with issues such as inequality, crime, mental health and social justice, students are encouraged to develop empathy, compassion and a commitment to the common good. The curriculum nurtures morally responsible, reflective individuals who recognise their own gifts and talents and are inspired to use them in service of others.
